Figure, D88.224
Physical Description
Carved wooden figure of drummer. Shirtless with cloth wrapper (skirt). Slightly bent forward, with holes in fists/hands to each hold drum sticks D88.224 B and D88.224C. Face and head of figure has much semblance to ancient Egyptian forms seen in hieroglyphics, carvings, etc. Wood is light in weight and light (natural) yellow in colour. Would suggest that this carved drummer goes with items D88.200A & B drums. Base of figure has no writing, but its similarity to style of figures F88.225(Note: labelled incorrectly, should be D88.225) and D88.226 suggests that it all are by the same carver "Kwame Bediako" who lived in "Achimota" in Accra, Ghana. Figure was carved without a base, i.e. figure stands directly on soles of feet. Carving has a rather unique 'precision' about it showing both craft and artistic skills. General appearance is of a nicely carved sculpture (repaired right arm), little handled, and in generally good condition.
Research Notes
