Plate, D88.192

Physical Description

Small brass plate. Flat bottom flared side extending up to flared flat horizontal edge. Interior and top of edge are each decorated. Exterior (including flat base) are undecorated. Plate appears to be hand made, hammering, chiselling and pecking. Majority - if not all - markings appear (under hand lens) to have been made using a punch with a 'c' or 'u' shaped pattern. Pattern on edge is formed by two concentric circles - one on outside edge, the other on inside edge - running the circumference of the plate. Circles are joined by a knotted strand, one end of each attached to each circle. The knot pattern - set slightly obliquely - repeats at approx. 5mm intervals the entire circumference. The interior base of the plate is divided roughly into 3 equal sections. Each section is comprised of a symmetrical pattern of florets and ribbons. A single circle running the circumference of the base encloses the 3 sections.
