Physical Description

Metal earrings of 1 Mark silver(?) coin attached (soldered) at top to 5 short many linked chains, in turns soldered to rectangular thin silver(?) sheet, in turn soldered to bent silver(?) wire for attaching to ear. Each earring has a small silver(?) ring soldered near to each 4 corners of the sheet. One coin (D88.169A) is dated "1910". The other coin (D88.169B) is dated "1905". One of 4 corner rings is missing from the 1910 coin. Coin has "1 MARK" printed on one side, with wreath around edge, and date at bottom. Other side has eagle looking to its left with full spread feathers.

Research Notes

Earrings are old silver(?) German 1 Mark coins. Cameroons - a former German Colony -borders Nigeria to the east. It would be reasonable that jewellery of German coins would be found in Maiduguri, Bornu Province, northeast Nigeria. Metal, likely silver. Earrings (pair) for pierced ears.
