Physical Description

Wood waka huia shaped bowl with lid. Pedestal legs at each end carved in form of human figures. Bowl deep internal sides smoothed, base rough - unstained. Rest of waka huia stained black. Lid and bowl carved with human figures (3 vertical rows each side) with longitudinal raised ridge along lid, carved with 2 human figures with perforation (handle) between. Inlaid paua eyes.

Research Notes

An outstanding example of a kumete style waka huia. The accession registry entry suggests a Rotorua origin which I tend to support. Possibly Ngai Tarawhai hapu. —Mr Mat Ellison
