Bailer, D25.2195
Physical Description
Large, heavy, thickwalled bailer. Made from twisty grained matai (Podocarpus spicatus). The front rim has been sawn off possibly to remove a damaged edge. This suggests that the bailer had been used. It has a somewhat rectangular shape & flat bottomed with vertical sides. It has the usual curvlinear designs on the back and handle knob. If it is a genuine article this may be a cross-over item in favour of a hearth shovel usage rather than a bailer.
Research Notes
This taoka would seems to have some unusual design features which based on an examination of the head particularly doesn't seem to fit in terms of design style and some aspects of carving execution. I recommend further research. —Mr Mat Ellison
